Lefkada (Ionian Islands)

English

Just off the west coast of central Greece sits the beautiful Ionian island of Lefkada. It is connected to the mainland by a long causeway and a floating bridge, which renders it a convenient destination to help you combine both mainland and island destinations during a trip to Greece.

The climate on the island is the epitome of Mediterranean weather, with hot summers and cool winters. Naturally green and surrounded by sandy beaches, Lefkada offers ample opportunity for exploration and even trekking through the Melissa Gorge. Perhaps a true testament to Lefkada's beauty is the story of the noted writer Patrick Lafkadio Hearn (also known as Koizumi Yakumo), who was born on the island by parents so enthralled with it that they named him after it. The island honored her son Patrick by opening the Lafkadio Hearn Historical Center, which now features early editions, rare books and Japanese collectibles.

In antiquity, Lefkada played an integral part to Homer's Odyssey (like most of the Ionian islands) and it also has strong connections to mythology with links to both Sappho and Aphrodite.  In later times, Lefkada has been influenced by both the Ottomans during the Middle Ages and the Venetians during the 18th century.

Aside from the island being accessible via the floating bridge connecting it to the mainland, there is also frequent ferry connection with other Ionian islands. The closest airport to Lefkada island is the airport of Aktion/Preveza, about 25 km from Lefkada Town. This airport works only in summer and receives charter flights from abroad and few charters from other Greek islands.
