After we pick you up from your hotel, we will begin our tour with arguably the most iconic landmark in the whole city; the White Tower. The jewel of Thessaloniki's waterfront, the White Tower has been in existence in some form or other since at least the 12th century. The Tower has also had a dark past, having served as an Ottoman fortress, garrison and prison, all of which earned the nickname 'Tower of Blood' and 'Red Tower'. At the run of the 20th century, the Tower was whitewashed, and earned its subsequent name which accompanies it to this day.
Our next visit will be one to cover the entire history of the region, starting from prehistory and until the modern day. As you probably guessed, we will be visiting the Archeological Museum of Thessaloniki! Thousands of exhibits from all over Macedonia, spanning millennia of history and a multitude of civilization that have left their mark on the region will unfold before your eyes. The Museum's stunning exhibition of golden jewels is a particular highlight. Leaving the Museum, we will drive by the International Trade Fair grounds and the Aristotelion University, which was established in 1926 and is one of the largest universities in the country. Making our way up the hill to what was once Thessaloniki's Acropolis, we will reach the Citadel, or Heptapyrgion as it is known among locals. The vantage point of the fortress offers a panoramic view of the entire city and the Thermaic Gulf, while on clear days even Mount Olympus is visible in the background. Heptapyrgion was constructed as a Byzantine Citadel and was transformed to an Ottoman fort after the conquest of the city. It later served as a prison before its restoration and subsequent transformation into a cultural interest site took place. Even though its name suggests it has seven Towers, in actuality ten towers surround the Citadel.
Our next and final stop will be the Saint Demetrios Basilica, dedicated to the patron Saint of the city. The five-aisled Basilica is a Byzantine church erected in the 5th century AD. It suffered a tragic fire in 1917 but was later restored and to this day features beautiful mosaics dating back more than a thousand years ago. Your guide will escort you to the area located under the basilica, where you will visit the famous crypt that lies there. According to tradition, it served as the confinement of an officer by the name of Demetrius who was later executed by the Roman Emperor Gallerius.
As we make our way back to your hotel, we will pass by the Arch of Gallerius and St. George’s Rotonda, two neighboring monuments which are excellent examples of early Byzantine art and architecture and have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Before we drop you off, we will also drive by the well-preserved Byzantine Basilica of Saint Sophia, an 8th Century structure, rich in mosaics and frescoes.
